Cynic Debunked

I was at the gym this evening, on the elliptical and the movie Honey with Jessica Alba was on TV. I'm not necessarily recommending the movie, but the end scene was this huge dance-off with this song. Here are some of the lines.
Never mind what people say
Hold your head high and turn away
With all our hopes and dreams
I will believe
Even though it seems it's not for me
I won't give up, I'll keep it up
I believe I can (I can)
I believe I will (I will)
I believe I know my dreams are real (know my dreams are real)
I believe I'll stand (Oh yeah)
I believe I'll dance
I believe I'll grow real soon and
that is what I do believe
The cynic in me just laughs at the 'believe in yourself and you will fly' hollywood drivel, but lately, I've decided that cynics miss out on a lot. I asked myself how much of that was something I should believe. A lot of times, I treat my dreams like little bits of lint, I squish them, roll them around in my pockets, but I don't really ever bring them out to the light of day and I'd never really give them a chance.
I think I do have an overblown fear of failure. I'm this awful combination of insecure, proud and people pleaser. I also suffer from a small view of God. God gave all of us gifts and life is full of creativity and opportunities.
Don't squish your dreams. I'm thinking about pulling mine out and actually giving them a chance.

  1. I'm so much the same in that way. ^_^ I'm awful at crushing my own dreams by not trying for fear of failure. Absolutely pathetic, but I still keep doing it. I'm working on it. Slowly. ^_^
